CHAPTER 66

As Danny walked down the hallway toward the cafeteria in search of Rolly, he had to admit the idea of having a source inside Gedeon’s camp was an exciting possibility. He really hoped that Rolly was right and that they could trust Lucian.

When Lucian had been held at the estate in Baltimore, he’d seen him a few times. But he didn’t think he’d heard the man utter a single word. He’d been completely silent. Nothing about him back then suggested he was someone they could trust.

But maybe the camp had changed him. Danny just hoped it was for the better and that he wasn’t leading Rolly along at Gedeon’s behest. Standing in the doorway of the cafeteria, he saw that Rolly and Lou were sitting with Brielle and Mobi.

He wended his way through the crowd, smiling and greeting people as he passed. Once again, he felt that comfort of being around people that he cared about. A squeal of laughter came from the corner as Tori and Witt played with Mustafa’s son. Smiles appeared on everyone’s faces within hearing distance. Kids seemed to bounce back a lot quicker than the adults. He could still see the haunted looks on the adults’ faces when they thought no one was watching.

He hadn’t asked what had happened in the camp. But he’d seen the footage from Jada. It was not going to be something that people were going to bounce back from easily. Right now, he knew that it was kind of the calm before the storm. People felt safe, but soon, it was all going to crash back down on them again. And they were going to be in for a pretty rough transition.

“Hey, look, he’s left the lab,” Lou called out as she caught sight of Danny.

He rolled his eyes in response. “It’s an office, not a lab.”

“Tomato, tomahto,” Lou said, pushing a chair back so that he could sit.

Danny slid into it and looked around the room. “What are you guys up to?”

“We’re discussing when Molly and JW are finally going to admit that they feel something for one another.”

Danny’s eyes widened. “There’s something going on between Molly and JW?”

Lou shook her head. “Oh, Danny. How can you be so smart in some areas and then completely oblivious in others?”

Feeling defensive, he hunched his shoulders. “I’ve been busy.”

Rolly chuckled. “You’re always busy.”

That was not a statement he could argue with. “Actually, that’s kind of what I wanted to talk to you about. You know your friend?”

Rolly nodded, his expression becoming closed off.

“How would you feel about getting a message to him?”
